Apartment Solar Now a Possibility

The ACT government is again leading other state government with their Solar for Apartments Program.  It provides up to $100,000 in grant funds to install roof top solar in apartment complexes. So far no such program exists in WA and apartment residents continue to be disadvantaged accessing solar products.

However WA residents can access rebates between $12,000 and $17,000 for a typical apartment complex. These financial incentives will reduce to zero in 2030.

In the past it was difficult for apartment residents to access solar energy for a variety of reasons.  Complexities around the installation but more importantly the decision-making processes involving the strata body have prevented many sites from installing solar and other technologies.

Changes to the Strata Titles Amendment Act 2018 now mean that an ordinary resolution is required, rather than a resolution without dissent to install products such as solar panels. This new Section 64 enables Strata to install solar panels with a much simpler process.  Therefore if you are an apartment owner we suggest discussing with other like-minded residents to start the approval process.

Technology has moved on and products exist that are designed with apartments in mind.
